Blackbuck antelope are arguably the worlds most strikingly beautiful gazelle. Mature males (referred to as rams) have an unmistakable sable-black coat highlighted with white eye rings, snout and undersides, and ringed horns rising in a tight corkscrew of 3 to 5 turns. Trophy males will have horns 18-22 inches on a straight measurement, and exceptional animals may reach 24-26 inches. Females, young males, and males in summer coat, are a light straw color with white undersides. Males will weigh about 90 lbs, and females 60lbs.

Originating on the plains of the Indian subcontinent, the blackbuck has adapted to a life in open plains and broken parkland. Like the American pronghorn antelope, they use sight and speed to distance themselves from danger, are very wary, and particularly difficult quarry with archery equipment. There are currently more blackbuck in the state of Texas than in their home country, where they can no longer be hunted. Blackbuck have also been imported to Argentina and Florida. Their light frame and thin skin make them very susceptable to cold weather. Being true antelope, they are hard horned and available for hunting year round, but the typical black coats are present from September thru mid April.
